One of Russia's most modern capitals, Barnaul sits in the Altai region famous for its cheese. There are over 60 cheese-making facilities in the area, with Barnaul having an institute solely devoted to the art of cheese manufacturing. Sitting on the Ob River, the city is located in the Southwestern district of Siberia. The town is modeled after St Petersburg and has the Turkestan-Siberia Railway passing through its heart. The downtown area of Barnaul is having a makeover in recent years, with the restaurant industry leading the charge and the cafe culture following suit.
