One of Russia's most modern capitals, Barnaul sits in the Altai region famous for its cheese. There are over 60 cheese-making facilities in the area, with Barnaul having an institute solely devoted to the art of cheese manufacturing. Sitting on the Ob River, the city is located in the Southwestern district of Siberia. The town is modeled after St Petersburg and has the Turkestan-Siberia Railway passing through its heart. One of the oldest cities, founded in the 1730s on the area's rich copper deposits, silver was later discovered near Mt Zmeinaya, making it the largest silver reservoir in the whole of Russia. One of the world's leading ammunition factories "Barnaul Machine-Tool Plant" is located here, as well as the unique industry of diamond faceting.
