About Marikina City

Officially named the "City of Marikina", it's however referred to as simply "Marikina City". A first class highly urbanized city in metropolitan Manila, Marikina City has a population of about 450,741 people, so don't expect to have too much personal space when cavorting around the town. It's the main gateway to Rizal and Quezon provinces along the Marikina-Infanta Highway and bordered by Quezon City, Pasig, San Mateo, Antipolo and Cainta. Once the provincial capital of the Manila Province, it was a rural settlement that became primarily residential and industrial. Today coworking venues have popped up on its streets catering to its buzzing startup scene.

Nicknamed the "Shoe Capital of the Philippines" as it produces almost 70% of all of the shoes made in the Philippines, the city even has a Shoe Museum for those with a shoe fetish to haunt or if you wish to check out the former First Lady's (Imelda Marcos) sizeable collection of shoes. Apart from shoes the city's businesses are scattered all over the city with the northern part being splattered with factories and warehouses. Its commercial hub sits at the Riverbanks Center where you can thrash credit cards ad nauseam and plenty of cafes and restaurants will keep any hunger pangs at bay.

The Philippines has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of new and innovative businesses led by ambitious young entrepreneurs. The private sector is supporting startups with investment, creating incubation programs and providing mentorship. The government has launched numerous initiatives and is laying out plans to foster its startup community. With the advent of coworking venues it is believed that it will help to create a culture of collaboration and support whether you have new shoes on your feet or not.
