About mclean

This is where the very first Apple Store appeared in 2001 and since then more than 300 have opened all around the world and dedicated Apple fans were born.  Apparently the opening has been likened to a scene out of a rock concert as the fans were lined up from 4am on the opening day.

Numerous diplomats, members of Congress, high ranking government officials and businessmen have set up house in McLean, due to its proximity to Washington DC and the CIA (aka Central Intelligence Agency).  Formerly home to Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy, it was the former home of Harry Lee, the Light-Horse War Hero of the Revolutionary era. As one can imagine it is awash in plush mammoth mansions and is the wealthiest ZIP code in the whole of the Washington Metropolitan area, in other words you can smell the money in the air.

Not only the homes reflect the wealth status, as the shopping is not for the feint hearted or for those that need to watch their bank balance.  Head to Tysons Corner Center or Tysons Galleria if you want to drool and press your nose against the shop windows.  If you don't want to be tempted, then head to the Fairfax County Park on the riverfront.  There is a section of the Potomac Heritage Trail that links the national and regional parkland where you will have 400 acres of forest, meadows and ponds to wander around without a shop in sight.  You can even fish from the riverbank, spy on some wildlife or birdlife with your binoculars or recline on a picnic blanket for a quiet nap.  If you want an alternative then go to the Great Falls Park for fantastic views, 15 miles of hiking trails and horse riding pathways.  For the history buffs there is the Colvin Run Mill that is an early 19th century wooden water wheel and operating gristmill set amidst gorgeous landscaped grounds.  If you want a taste of life in the 18th Century, head to the Claude Moore Colonial Farm that is a reconstructed revolutionary war farm to satisfy your curiosity and to bob for apples.
