About Lynchburg

From Monacan, Powhatans and the Iroquois Indians to Thomas Jefferson, Civil War battles and plantations where slaves labored, Lynchburg was named after its founder, John Lynch. In 1757 at the tender age of 17 years he began a ferry service across the James River and eventually was granted a charter for a town in 1786. He replaced his ferry with the first bridge in 1812. Lynchburg was the only town not captured by the Union before the ending of the American Civil War. Known as the "City of Seven Hills" or "Hill City", it sits at the feet of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is a charming historical town with sweeping river views, wineries and lush gardens.

You can take a walk down history when you go to the South River (Quaker) Meeting House that was the first religious group to settle in Lynchburg or the Miller-Clayton House, the 4th house to be built in the town. Wander around Miller Park named after the early settler Samuel Miller or the home named Point of Honor, that rumor has suggested was once the area used as a dueling ground. You should head to the Federal style building now known as the Western Hotel, but whose dubious history involved being a brothel. You can take a walk around local markets; museums if you want more of a dose of history than just trotting around the historical buildings and spend endless hours fossick in antique shops. Put on your hiking boots and take to the hills or for the wine lovers, do a tour of one of the wineries in the area with the added benefit of being able to sample some local wine.
