About Murfreesboro

Home to the largest undergraduate university in Tennessee, Murfreesboro sits in the county of Rutherford and is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. It is also the geographical center of Tennessee. This is where it is illegal to catch a fish by lasso and a whale is the only animal that you are allowed to hunt from a moving vehicle - good luck with that one. Murfreesboro has another dubious note of interest being that it is home to the world's largest cedar bucket capable of holding 1,566 gallons. If you filled it with cans of coke, it would take 16,704 cans and if you had one a day, it would take 45 years to finish it all. So apart from a bit of a wacky name, Murfreesboro is also in the land of wacky laws.

If you want to find out about the Civil War timeline, head to the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center to get your bearings. Then take a stroll through the historic square in downtown Murfreesboro where there is a collection of eclectic shops, an historic courthouse and a few restaurants. You can take a hike or a swim for that matter at Long Hunter State Park, exploring the natural beauty of the area. For the history fiend, take a walk over the ground where Civil War soldiers fought and died at the Stones River National Park. You can meander around the boyhood plantation home of Sam Davis, a Confederate hero who was hung at the tender age of 21. The pioneer days can be experienced in all their glory at the Cannonsburgh Village or take in the Oaklands Historic House Museum, whilst the Bradley Academy will give you an insight into the United States Colored Troops.

When the history route gets too much, indulge in a game of golf or splash around at the water park. You can even take to a car and go for a scenic drive through the lush countryside.
