About Canton
A city in Ohio, Canton was founded in 1805 with a history of heavy manufacturing due to its numerous railroad lines. It was during the 20th Century that it diversified into the service economy including retailing, education, finance and healthcare. With a population of around the 73,000 mark, the city sits on the outskirts of the greater northeast Ohio metropolitan area and on the edge of Ohio's extensive Amish country. Coworking is now making an appearance in this city that is experiencing an urban renaissance due to its growing and thriving arts district.
It is the terminus of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and located along the historic Lincoln Highway, the present-day US Route 30. Coworking is the latest addition to this town known for its football and for the fact that William McKinley conducted the famous "front porch campaign" that won him the presidency of the United States in 1896 from his home in Canton. This is also the town that was one of the first cities in Ohio to allow the "open consumption of alcoholic beverages" in 2015, for those that may like to imbibe occasionally.
Numerous historical buildings are being rehabilitated and converted into upscale lofts, which is attracting new residents to this downtown development where creativity hangs in the air. It has become a hotspot for the innovative and the inspired with district houses turning into art galleries, bars, shops and restaurants plus coworking spaces.
The redevelopment of what is known as the "innovation district" is aimed at creating a technology-friendly district to entice companies and businesses to relocate to the area and to give local talent an alternative space to work via coworking spaces. With such plans to oversee the rejuvenation of a 12-block district in the city's downtown area, hopes are high to create an ecosystem that will lead to the next Uber or Google being created in their midst.
