About Troy

Claiming to be the historical home of "Uncle Sam", to some people Troy is a tad on the gritty side with a few neighborhoods in the unsavory category. An old industrial city, Troy sits on the eastern bank of the Hudson River in the state of New York. Once home to the Mohican Indian tribe, the Dutch settled in Troy during the mid 17th Century and it became a city in 1816. Cloaked in historical colonial buildings with a large downtown area that is being revitalized, Troy is a walkable city with a certain charm.

It was named after the legendary city of Troy in Homer's "Iliad" during the years when the trend was to use classical names for cities. It is home to the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During the prohibition years, Troy became a hot spot for the illegal alcohol trade openly having speakeasies and brothels. During World War II it gained a colorful reputation with gangster characters such as "Legs Diamond" doing their business based in Troy.

Throw the pepper spray in your bag and head to the Waterfront Farmers' Markets for either a great feed as you stroll around or to buy up some local produce for later. If you like to fossick then go to the Joe Bruno Stadium for the flea market that will have your jaw dropping. For a touch of reflection, head to the Oakwood Cemetery and experience the historical touches of death. There is the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center to play around in or the Burden Iron Works Museum for a look at the beginnings of Troy's iron industry. The architecture of the buildings in the Central Troy Historic District range from Victorian to Belle Époque in some grand masonry works where cast and structural iron works will astound, carved decorative stone facades can be seen, etched glass works and fine wood work can be admired. This is where numerous movies have been filmed such as "The Bostonians", "Scent of a Woman" and "The Emperor's Club" to name a few.

In recent times the Northern River Street area in downtown Troy has become a cafe and art gallery domain where many free live shows are hosted during the summer months, so don't leave Troy without a stroll through this area.
