About Rochester

Once a booming economy as the headquarters of Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb, Rochester has seen its fair share of financial dominance - and decline. Now only home to Kodak, empty factories and warehouses make parts of the city look like a modern-day ghost town. But, thanks to huge efforts made by the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the nearby Cornell University, Rochester is experiencing its second boom - in the tech industry. With numerous startups focusing on photographic processing and imaging, optical science, and various STEM fields, Rochester is increasingly helping Western New York live up to is new nickname of "Tech Valley."

When it comes to local culture, Rochester goes right for the stomach: it's particularly known for some interesting dishes, including white hots and the infamous "garbage plate." (Trust us - it tastes better than it sounds.)

But, if you're traveling here in winter, consider yourself warned: Rochester is known for its heavy snowstorms - so make sure to bring plenty of layers. And you'll need a car to get around, as the city has no official public transit system. Just be sure to use caution and common sense, as Rochester has an extremely high crime rate in both its downtown and suburban areas.

Pro tip: On those nice days, get outdoors and plan a day trip to Letchworth State Park (about a 1.5 hour drive from the city). It was voted the Best State Park in the entire country in 2015.
