About Kingston

Architecture and historical churches appear to be the main draw cards in Kingston. Sitting in the county of Ulster, it is 146 km north of New York City. In 1777 Kingston was New York's first capital city, but the British burned down the town in October of that same year following the Battles of Saratoga. After the discovery of natural cement in the area, Kingston became an important transport hub as it had both canal and railroad connections. Awash in history, there is plenty to keep the history sniffing around for a day or more.

Definitely meander around the 3 historic districts: Stockade District located uptown, the Rondout-West Strand Historic District in the downtown section and the Midtown Neighborhood Broadway Corridor. The area of Wall Street between John Street and North Front Street is dressed in plenty of charming old world buildings that are now occupied by funky boutique shops and plenty of restaurants to keep the hunger pangs at bay. It is possible to take a cruise on the river and definitely take time out to check out the Hudson River Maritime Museum. You can also grab a ride on a trolley at the Trolley Museum of New York, for those that are into quirky travel.

As for the churches dotted around, there is: Saint James United Methodist Church built in 1893 replacing older structures from 1823 with huge circular stain glass windows, St. Mark's A.M.E. Church (African Methodist Episcopal), the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church built in the 1870s where you can gawk at Germanic medieval Romanesque arched windows and doors juxtaposed with a Gothic spire, and the Old Dutch Church with a congregation that first began in 1659 complete with an old cemetery. If by some chance you don't require redemption and just want to get married and you are gay, head to the Celebration Wedding Chapel, a non-denominational church focusing on the LBGT community.

If churches and buildings are not your cup of tea, then head to the Academy Green Park to check out some larger than life historical statues or your navel, whichever appears to be more interesting for your frame of mind.
