About Saint Paul

With a history as a hotbed of 1930s prohibition-era gangster life (think guys in pinstripe suits and gun molls) Saint Paul, the capital of Minnesota is in the county seat of Ramsey. Spread out on the east bank of the Mississippi River where the Minnesota River joins, it is known as the "Twin Cities" of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, branding itself as the "Most Livable City in America". In fact Saint Paul has more city shoreline along the river than any other American city. A business hub of the Upper Midwest, the cityscape contains the state government and other important institutions.

For those that love a bit of historical architecture, this is where you will find the longest stretch of restored Victorian homes in the United States, in Summit Avenue. If you wish to indulge your architectural mind more, go to the Cathedral of St Paul where you can gaze at stained glass windows, travertine walls, large Italian-style Mosaics and a 60 ft carved granite relief of Christ and His apostles.

You can take a cruise along the river on a large riverboat to see the stunning scenery and do a bit of tweeting with binoculars. It might be an idea to take a guided tour, despite the constant babble, around the Wabasha Street Caves that were carved from sandstone. They were actually a hideout of "Ma Baker" and her gang of mobsters during the 1920s and 1930s. You can release the inner child and chat to the animals at the Minnesota Zoo that covers 500 acres with habitat trails allowing you to see the animals in their natural habitats. If you want more interaction with animals then head over to the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory that also has an 18- hole golf course and a concert pavilion. The museum buffs can crawl all over the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Schubert Club Musical Instrument Museum dating from the 1880s showcasing over 100 instruments from harpsichords to photographs or the Minnesota History Center.

When you want time out, head to Rice Park in the heart of the downtown area.
