About Columbia

Columbia is a planned community that consists of 10 self-contained villages, located in Howard County, Maryland, United States. It began with the idea that a city could enhance its residents' quality of life.

Creator and developer James W. Rouse saw the new community in terms of human values, not just in terms of economics and engineering, and opened it in 1967. Today, Columbia has a population of about 97,200 and many choose to live here because of its proximity to Baltimore, Maryland and Washington D.C. In fact, more than 2,500 large and small companies, more than 50 nonprofit organizations, and the U.S. Department of Defense provide jobs to those who want to both live and work in Columbia.

By the early 2000s, the town had acquired many of the characteristics of other contemporary U.S. suburbs, such as increasingly large private homes on large parcels and "big box" retail stores. For entrepreneurs or small enterprises with remote teams, Columbia is a great destination for business and professional networking opportunities, especially within the town’s variety of flex and coworking spaces. Following a day in the office, you can explore the vibrant, thriving downtown area, nice village centers, and the Columbia Gateway — a large industrial campus, which creates hubs for activity.
