About San Rafael

An affluent city in Marin County of California, San Rafael sits in the North Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Area. A titbit of quirky information is the fact that it's believed the term "420" (referring to cannabis consumption) originated in San Rafael before spreading to the rest of the United States and the world. Apparently "420" refers to smoking a joint on April 20 at the San Rafael High School. There's even a poem named "The Smoke-Off" (written by Shel Silverstein) about a girl "Pearly Sweetcakes" who came from San Rafael. The city is home to numerous companies such as GIS Data Resources, Westamerica Bank and Autodesk, to name a few. Coworking venues opening up in the city is no surprise given that California has an integrated community of universities with the startup ecosystem producing innovative and creative entrepreneurs.

San Rafael has been the backdrop for many movies such as American Graffiti and Gattaca after the arrival of George Lucas in the city in 1970. In 1971 Lucasfilm was founded, and it's best known for its global movie hits "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones". Video game developers were attracted to the city as well as several major studios, but many have since left.
California actually produces more tech PhDs per year than any other region in the country, and the California Institute of Technology generates more patents and startups than any other university. California has a growing new generation of tech innovators, a dynamic ecosystem and diverse influences that lead to innovation. With many graduates wanting to stay on their own home territory, coworking venues have become the playground and the hangout for many creatives where they can get support, mingle with like-minded souls and get their stuff done.
