About Newquay

Known as the "Surfing Capital", Newquay's history lies in the tales of salt smuggling pirates. Newquay was a cluster of thatched houses in a perfectly protected cove where smuggling became a more viable alternative to fishing and agriculture. The pirates have gone and today the town is a fishing port slash seaside resort town where surfing is one of the prime reasons for its tourism trade.  There is a bustling vibe with a vibrant nightlife, courtesy of the surfers that frequently chase waves, and the scenery is stunning around this North Cornish coastal town.

Sitting on the North Atlantic, the town's population swells from around 20,000 to 100,000 during peak holiday periods. Awash in a surfing mentality, Newquay reputedly has the best breaks with hollow waves and the best sized swell in the whole of the United Kingdom.  You can find waves to ride at Fistral, Towan, Great Western, Tolcarne or nearby Watergate Bay and Crantock Beaches.

If surfing is not your turn on, then you can partake of dolphin watching tours, snare yourself a crab or go fishing. For the brave few, you can even go shark cage diving. Find the inner child and take a ride on the Lappa Valley Steam Railway or if you are looking for a bit of time out, then head to Gannel Estuary and take a dreamy stroll along the waterway, if the tide is out. Stop off for a fresh crab sandwich that will make your mouth salivate in anticipation of munching on it.
