About Derby

Think Tomb Raider the game and Lara Croft, as this is where her character was created. Or think of the term "survival of the fittest" because the Derby Philosopher Herbert Spencer came up with this gem of a concept. Romans, Saxons and Vikings have all put their feet on Derby soil, as well as a breeding pair of peregrine falcons that have nested on a tower of the Derby Cathedral since 2006 and can be spied upon by webcam.

Sitting on the banks of the Derwent River in the south of Derbyshire, it was initially a market town that grew into an industrial enclave. One of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution, with the arrival of the railway in the 19th Century it grew to become the center of the British Rail industry. Today it is home to the world's second largest aero-engine manufacturer, Rolls Royce. Also Derby Litchurch Lane Works, the remaining train manufacturer in the UK and Toyota Manufacturing UK call Derby home.

You can meander around the city gazing at several historical landmarks: The Derby Gaol and its dungeons dating back to 1756 and the Derby Industrial Museum in the old Derby Silk Mill where you can see Rolls-Royce aero engines. Wander around the area of the Silk Mill at the southern end of the Derwent River, which is a World Heritage Site. Check out Pickford's House Museum built in 1770 or the Derby Museum and Art Gallery showcasing the paintings of Joseph Wright. When the architecture fix is satisfied, then head to Cathedral Quarter for cute cafes, restaurants, bars and some amazing art galleries to while away some time and maybe some money. For the dedicated shopper on a mission, head to "intu Derby" where you can watch a movie to give your feet a break of shop tramping.
