About Izmir

From Roman ruins to fresh fish and wonderful olive groves, Izmir sits in a wide rocky bay of the Aegean halfway down Turkey's west coast.  Supposedly first settled by those warrior chicks that loved to fight, the Amazons, it is home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis. Conquered by Alexander the Great and the Ottoman Empire, the landmark ruins are what you have read about in your school history books.

Known as "beautiful Izmir" this is where you can totally immerse yourself in either decadent self-pleasures of the spa, thermal waters and beaching variety, or be a lustful adventurer and see as much as you can before going "gaga" at the diverse and rich culture and history of the area. You can meander cobblestone alleyways and find the traditional bazaar district of Kemeralti, stroll along the boulevards, strut the seaside promenade or giggle when riding a century-old cliff face elevator. Scoffing yourself on figs, olives, grapes, the local vino, fresh sunny fruits and mouthwatering seafood plus more local vino is a given, no matter how you fill in your days.

Day trips are plentiful to explore further afield, but unless you enjoy following the leader with a bright red flag raised to the heavens, it is a better option and way more fun to go for a private local guide.
