About Dumaguete

Sitting in the south of the Philippines on Negros Island, Dumaguete has a population of around 131,377 people meandering its streets of which about 45,000 are students. Nicknamed "The City of Gentle People", this is a university city with 4 within its midst, plus a number of other colleges. Its most well known university is the Silliman University that was the country's first Protestant university and the first American university in Asia. Dumaguete is often referred to as the "centre of learning in the South" as it's a melting pot of students, artists, scholars and professionals from all over the world. With such a load of brainpower meandering its streets, it's little wonder that coworking venues have opened up.

Dumaguete's economy is based in the retail industries, tourism, its universities, IT firms plus BPO and technology-related activities. The city has a huge outsourcing industry such as call centers, animation, editing, medical transcription and the list goes on. This town is listed in the top 10 most visited tourist destinations in the whole of the Philippines with popular sites including the historic Rizal Boulevard that is overflowing with hotels, bars, fine-dining restaurants and cafes. Museums are everywhere as are churches, where you can say a little prayer for the success of your startup.

Dumaguete has been described as a hub for business process outsourcing and information technology. The Philippines in general has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of new and innovative businesses led by ambitious young entrepreneurs. The private sector is supporting startups with investment, creating incubation programs and providing mentorship. The government has launched numerous initiatives and is laying out plans to foster its startup community. With the advent of coworking venues it is believed that it will help to create a culture of collaboration and support.
