About Den Bosch

In the land where the adults smother their toast in the mornings with "sprinkles" or "muisjes" (think candied anise seeds), named "hagelslag" and furiously snack on fries with mayonnaise or frikandel (the yucky animal parts vaguely pressed into a hotdog shape and deep-fried), Den Bosch (aka 's-Hertogenbosch) is cloaked in a medieval character. An historic fortified city with 2 rivers flowing through its heart - the Dommel and the Binnendieze - there are a large number of reminders of its rich history from the 16th and 17th Centuries to explore. You should put on your walking shoes and just take off, as many of the streets are pedestrian only.

One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands you should start your fortification exploratory meander on the south side of the city where you will find the Bastion Vught and follow your nose via the Parklaan Spinhuiswal, Zuidwal, the Bastion Oranje and Hekellaan, where you will reach the bridge heading over to Zuid Willemsvaart. Make sure you visit the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center, not just for the arty crowd, as it honors the famous 15th Century painter and Den Bosch resident at the time, Jheronimus Bosch. There are numerous museums to expand the grey matter of your brain, such as the Stedelijk Museum or gawk at some ancient buildings like the Moriaan, built in the 13th Century. The most prominent landmark in the city is the Gothic styled Saint Jans Cathedral. You can check out the old powder arsenal opposite the Citadel that is now a museum for art and there is even a subterranean boat trip to be had through the old waterway system.
Wednesdays and Saturdays are for market fossicking with a laid back vibe in the center of the city at the Market Square, where after checking out the local goodies for sale, you can hang out on one of the terraces of the surrounding cafes and even light up a joint if you are so inclined. The sweet tooth should indulge in the local dessert known as "Bossche Bol" (a pastry ball smothered in chocolate and filled with cream).
