About Apeldoorn

Home to the famous 17th Century palace "Het Loo", Apeldoorn is a post World War II "new town" of business districts and modern residential areas. Prior to the war, the city was merely a large village. More a "mum and dad plus 2.5 kids" city than a raging tourist haunt, it is known for being spacious and eco-friendly. A regional center of some stately villa homes, it includes the villages of Beekbergen, Loenen and Hoenderloo.

There is the Apenheul Ape Zoo, if you want an in-depth conversation with some chimps/monkeys and generic shopping with some cafes and restaurants dotted around the town. The north end of Apeldoorn is where you will find some Jugendstil/art-Nouveau architecture for those that want to look at buildings. The Dutch palace known as "Het Loo" has to be on the must do list, as it is the only royal residence open to the public in the Netherlands. You can let the inner child out and have a steam train ride to Beekberges where you can visit the railway museum "Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschapij" overflowing with steam train relics. If you want to go for a relaxing stroll, then head to one of the city parks such as Oranjepark, the oldest one in the city or the smallest park across the road, "Prins Hendrikplsin" to sit on a bench and contemplate your toes. You can learn how to skydive at the Teuge airport on the outskirts of town, if you are a bit of a daredevil.

Make sure you check out the "Man with Two Hats" monument that represents the gratitude of the Dutch citizens towards the Canadians for freeing them from Germany during World War II.
