About Cancun

A Mexican city on the Yucatan Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea, Cancun is synonymous with sun-drenched beaches, throbbing nightlife and over-the-top resorts. It has 2 distinct areas: the traditional downtown area of El Centro with local flavors and the glitzy long beachfront party strip known as Zona Hotelera, awash in high-rise hotels, shops, restaurants and nightclubs lining white sandy beaches.

Literally translated "Cancun" means snake pit or nest of serpents and the city was originally named "Ekab" meaning black earth. Over recent years massive renovations have added another 7 miles of white sandy coast to Cancun for the beach bums and the sun worshippers to roll on. The stunning white beaches are actually crushed coral, so this is one place where you won't burn your feet running along the beach. It is where you will find the second largest coral reef in the world - the first being the Great Barrier Reef in Australia- and it is also home to 3 of the largest underwater cave systems in the world.

Perfect beaches and perfect weather make it a tourist haven with its international airport the second busiest one in Mexico. For those into nature you can check out the turtle farms of Isla Mujeres and Chichen Itza, or the hundreds of iguanas at El Rey. From mid-May to mid-September you can swim beside gigantic sperm whales, whilst in the north at Isla Holbox there are massive whale sharks to frolic with.
If golf is your thing, there are numerous challenging golf courses to chase little white balls on, or you can simply hang out at a beach-side cafe all day or chow down in one of the many open-air restaurants.

You won't be at a loss for something to do when work is not calling your creative juices to flow.
