About Lucknow

Lucknow, the epicenter of Indian art, culture and food, is where you can immerse yourself in the historical Sultanate era. Known as the "City of Nawabs" (historically an honorific title given to Muslim rulers), Lucknow is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh and the 3rd largest city in the north, east and central India after Delhi and Kolkata. Multicultural, the city was the seat of power of Nawabs during the 18th and 19th Centuries and continues to be a prime city for education, commerce, aerospace, finance, technology, design, tourism plus music and poetry. Awash in an ancient hue (think more than 800 years), it sits on the northwestern shores of the Gomti River.

Lucknow is 1 of the 3 cities in the "Heritage Arc" of the Uttar Pradesh Tourism (the others are Agra and Varanasi). Whilst munching on famous kebabs as you meander around the sacred city of Naimisharanya Tirth, contemplate the fact that it is said that Lord Krishna's brother visited the site as well as 88000 saints meditated here. Check out the Begum Hazrat Mahal Park, saunter around the Lucknow Zoo for some animal time and pig out on some tandoori chicken in the Aminabad bazaar. Take the time to grope your way through the maze of narrow tunnels at the Bhool Bhulaiya and admire the grand Victorian Husainabad Clock Tower built in 1881 that is nearby.

The locals are a proud people where Hindu and Muslim lifestyles invade the very pores of the city and the cuisine is a melting pot of cultures. There is Turkish and European architecture to fawn over, artistic embroidery (Chikankari) work to buy, Indian classical dance to appreciate and soul touching "ghazals or sharyaris" (poems) to listen to. Lucknow is a city for food lovers and artistic souls to hang out in.
