About Krefeld

Once known as "Crefeld", Krefeld sits in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany northwest of Dusseldorf and only moments from the River Rhine. Today the city is often referred to as the "Velvet and Silk City" due to its burgeoning textile industry - think 80% of all neckties are made here. The city began in the Roman times but flourished during the 17th Century when quite a few wars and skirmishes could not put a dent in its industrial growth. Half of the city is smothered in green parks with plenty of bike trails to go exploring. The city zoo is where you can have a chat to over 1200 animals (about 230 different species) and there is a castle, Burg Linn, to meander around its exhibitions. A contemporary art museum will keep the artsy folk happy, while coworking venues will put a smile on the faces of the innovative ilk.

Germany's startup scene is thriving with opportunities given to creative souls to pitch their ventures to investors at "Startup Germany" that went on tour at the instigation of the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad. The startup scene is a bit of a mixed bag with almost 30% of startup staff not being German. There are a few hurdles to overcome such as red tape hassles, language barriers and the fact that most founders wish to hire skilled foreign workers. Eight out of ten German startups want to go international, but legal systems and regulations may be inhibitors in this regard.

Despite these niggles, coworking spaces are overflowing with creatives in collaborative mode whilst mingling with a vibrant community.
