About Quito

A capital in the clouds, Quito rests atop the Andes mountains at 2800 meters and offers its patrons a rich history and diverse present. The city’s “Old Town” was one of the first places dubbed a UNESCO heritage site and is among the oldest standing preserved city centers to be found in the Americas. It’s numerous churches and colonial architecture make it a fascinating place to wander through. If you happen to be in town during a Christian holiday such as Easter or Christmas you can bear witness to mass processions and extensive festivities.

Stunning natural beauty is all around Quito as well, with imposing volcanoes and jagged peaks running through the land in dramatic fashion. Also a short bus ride away is the “Middle of the World,” a tribute to its latitudinal centricity. Within Quito one can find an up and coming market and a growing economy, with gentrification slowly blurring the lines between the skyscrapers and working class areas. Be forewarned despite its equatorial position Quito can get quite cold given its elevation, so make sure to pack accordingly.

Whatever the weather though, Quito is a wonderful perch atop the Andes for any South American nomad.
