About Saskatoon

This is where you will find "The Meewasin Valley Trail", listed as one of the top 10 greatest hikes in Canada.  From buffalo kill sites to teepee rings Saskatoon is a vibrant and young town that foodies will love. Named after the Cree Indian name for a wild sweet berry, Saskatoon is the largest city sitting in the middle of the Saskatchewan Province on the South Saskatchewan River. Affectionately referred to as "The Paris of the Prairies" because there are 7 bridges, "POW" referring to potash, oil and wheat, the natural resources of the area or "The Hub City" because it is the hub of the Saskatchewan province.

Established in 1883, the area had been inhabited for anything up to 8000 years prior to this.  Home to "Baba's Homestyle Perogies" drive thru that is probably the only one in Canada, it has the highest number of restaurants per capita in the whole of Canada upholding the beliefs of "farm to fork" (aka paddock to plate) produce. Immortalized in Johnny Cash's song "The Girl from Saskatoon", there are over 870 hectares of parkland to explore.

Locally known as the "Bez", the iconic Delta Bessborough Hotel built by the Canadian National Railway in 1932, is definitely worth having a gawk at and if you happen to be a shutterbug freak, get the hotel framed in one of the arches of the Broadway Bridge for a brilliant photograph.  There is the Mendel Art Gallery to explore or the local Saskatoon Farmers' Markets to wander around. During the winter months you can take a twirl on the Meewasin Skating Rink and get a wet rear end.  In the summer take to the Meewasin Valley Trail that follows the South Saskatchewan River for a hike or a cycle and in the winter months it is the perfect place to get into some cross-country skiing.
