About Ruse

The elegant city of Ruse is a city of impressive grandness cloaked in belle époque and neo-baroque architecture and leafy squares. Historically known as "Rustchuk", it is the 5th largest city in Bulgaria sitting in its northeast on the bank of the Danube. A river port town, it is an important hub on the international trade route of the country. Here you will be standing in the oldest European country (681AD) with some of the most valuable archaeological sites in the world and known as a world-class wine producing area.

Often referred to as "Little Vienna" there is numerous museums to meander around to glean its history, as well as a ruined Roman fortress to explore. The center of the city is dominated by a huge monument, "Monument to Freedom" where you will find 18 streets radiating out from the square - Freedom Square - into the depths of the city. This is the usual scene for the city's frivolities and festivals with cafes, shops and restaurants wall-to-wall, along with numerous fountains and other monuments of lesser impressive size. The museum buff will be excited as there are a few to look through like the National Transport Museum, the Regional Historical Museum overflowing with over 140,000 treasures and the Kaliopa House where you can gawk at the first grand piano imported from Vienna to Bulgaria.

You should not miss out on investigating the nearby rock monasteries at the Rusenski Lom Nature Park and remember to buy some Bulgarian rose oil (it takes 1000 rose blossoms to make one gram) so expect to pay for it.

You will get used to the fact that Bulgarians show their approval by shaking their heads, instead of nodding.
