About Namur

Straddling 3 different regions, the Hesbave, the Condroz and the Sambre-et-Meuse, you had better brush up on your French if you want to be understood in this town.

Namur is the capital of the province of Namur, Belgium. It is a city like all the others in Belgium where comic books reign - think of production lines more than Japan. The land of chocolates, waffles, frites (eaten with mayonnaise of course) and diamonds, Belgium is known as the "Essence of Europe". Included in the city of Namur are the old communes of Beez, Belgrade, Saint-Servais, Saint-Marc, Bouge, Champion, Daussolx, Flawinne, Malonnne, Suarlee, Temploux, Naninne, Wepion, Wierde, Erpent, Lives-sur-Meuse and Loyers.

On the small side as far as cities go, Namur is perfect for putting on the walking shoes and leisurely strolling around. You should head to the areas of the Citadelle, the riverbanks of the Meuse and the Sambre, and the heart of the city itself sitting between the Namur railway station and the junction of the Meuse and the Sambre. Many of the streets are pedestrian only, so you have no fear of getting run down. On Saturday mornings the streets are choked with market stalls to ferret through. If you don't want to wear out the soles of your shoes, then jump on a bicycle and pedal around, but be warned that it is fairly hilly. Most of the old city will take your breathe away as it is covered in stunning architecture with traditional houses of Mosan style made out of grey stones and bricks with black slate roofs. There are many old churches to either bypass or take the time to explore, and the Museum of Old Namurois Art, is worth poking your nose into for its collection of Medieval and Renaissance Christian artworks. Other museums include the Archaeological Museum, the small Felicien Rops and the Groesbeeck de Croix.

The "Fetes de Wallonies" takes place annually at the end of September or the beginning of October. This involves much drinking of alcoholic beverages especially the local brew known as "peket" and live concerts for those that love to celebrate and rub shoulders with locals. It may even improve your French linguistic skills.
