About Klagenfurt

The capital city of the southern Austrian province of Carinthia, Klagenfurt is the 6th largest city in the country with a population of about 100,316 people meandering its streets. Home to the bishop's seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt and the Alpen Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, the town is a maze of ancient narrow streets with Renaissance and Baroque buildings around the Alter Platz, where you will find a 17th Century Town Hall. Innsbruck sits to the west and Vienna to the Northeast with Klagenfurt almost in the middle near the international border. On its doorstep is the Glan River and Lake Wörthersee for the outdoor enthusiasts to get excited about, plus there is the Karawanken Mountain range within striking distance if you want to get into the wilds, rather than get busy in a coworking venue.

A foggy place during winter and autumn, Klagenfurt has super cold winters when you can rug up in your thermal undies and sit by a fire. Wrapped up in the legend that the city was founded by a couple of awesome "dudes" who slayed a dragon in the moors of the lake that apparently liked to indulge in the odd bit of virgin eating, there is a huge 9 ton monument commemorating this fact in the city's heart. The city has endured fires, earthquakes, locust invasions and has been ravaged by Islamic Ottomans. It took an Italian Renaissance architect "Domenico dell'Allio to construct new fortifications for the city that made it the strongest fortress north of the Alps. In spite of this the town was over run by French troops then later occupied by the Army of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Incorporated in 1938, the city was bombed 41 times during World War II, but there is still plenty to see that should put a smile on the history lover's faces.

Klagenfurt is home to numerous educational institutions such as the University of Klagenfurt giving the city a youthful edgy vibe. It may not be a tech hub per se, but it does have a number of intrepid and innovative souls pigging out on "käsespätzle", that is Austria's version of macaroni cheese, in front of the fire after they have spent the day getting creative in a coworking venue.
