About Norfolk

Raise a few eyebrows and have a giggle when you pronounce Norfolk the correct way, that is "Nah - F$%k".  It is a town literally awash in mermaids and you can grab a map and go hunting for all them dotted around the cityscape.  About 10 years ago larger-than-life mermaids that were hand painted by local artists became the city's way of beautifying its streets.  Not only mermaids inhabit Norfolk, as it is home to the Naval Station Norfolk that is the largest naval station in the world.  You can even join a tour if you are a budding Fleet Admiral.

Norfolk sits in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the core of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, bordered by the Elizabeth River and Chesapeake Bay in a large natural harbor. One of the oldest cities in the area overflowing with history and culture, Norfolk is an urban hub and a strategic military and transportation point.  Not only is the Naval Station Norfolk here, but also NATO's 2 Strategic Command Headquarters are located in Norfolk as well.

In town you can find a memorial to General MacArthur, the most decorated American soldier of the Great War and the Chrysler Museum known for its amazing Glass Studio.  A show can be had at the Chrysler Hall or an opera performance at the Virginia Opera.  Art is a big part of this city as the mermaid scenario suggests, so make sure you get to the D'art Center where you can see artists in action creating their masterpieces.  The Hermitage Museum and Gardens is overflowing with artwork and 12 acres of gardens to stroll around. You can take time out to smell the roses or let a butterfly land on your nose at the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
