About Novokuznetsk

Novokuznetsk is the place to gulp down Vodka de Novokuzneck, gorge on pelmeni (dumplings filled with meat or fish) and wait for your lift out of town to either the Kuznetsky Alatau Nature Reserve, Sheregesh for snowboarding or Tashtagol for some skiing. The town is frequently a stopover destination, rather than a destination itself. It is between Abakan and Biysk, also Tuva and Altai.

Branded as being 1 of the top 5 polluted cities in Russia, the town is an industrial and coal mining hub and produces 70% of Russia's train tracks. Founded on the Tom River's right bank in 1618 and historically known as "Kuznetsk" (Blacksmith City) it sits in the Kemerovo Oblast's southern region of Siberia. The largest city in the region, it does have some incredible Soviet-era monuments. With temperatures that can drop to minus 15 degrees Celsius during winter, make sure you have packed your woolies and bed socks.

To check out some preserved pre-revolutionary stone buildings, head to the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Kuznetsk Fortress and its barracks or the Novokuznetsk distillery. For those that like to poke around museums, there are quite a few to investigate such as the Novokuznetsk Museum of Local Lore, the Novokuznetsk Art Museum and The Historical and Architectural Museum "Kuznetsk Fortress" to name a few. It is possible to catch a performance at one of the theaters in town and if you are into puppets by some chance, make sure you go to the Novokuznetsk Puppet Theater for a giggle. Of course there is a circus, a public skating rink and ice hockey to watch, or join in if you are feeling brave.
