About Utsunomiya

If you are into pan fried dumplings to munch on, then Utsunomiya in Japan is the place to go to as there are over 200 "gyoza" restaurants sitting with their doors open just to feed you some dumplings. The most populous city of the Tochigi Prefecture in the northern region of Japan, Utsunomiya is the 10th most populated city in the Kanto region.

The city streets are lined with horse chestnut trees, it is the hometown of jazz great Sadao Watanabe and touts itself as being a Jazz Town famous for its cocktail bars.

There is no public transport around the town, so it is a matter of using your feet or maybe some pedal power. This is not a tourist town and probably won't be on your list of must-do cities to see in Japan. There are a few clubs and restaurants littering the streets plus shops to meander around. If you want to do some sightseeing there is the Futarayama Shrine with its several stories high stairway that ends in a large temple. For a bit of cherry blossom viewing, head to Hachimanyama Park or there is the Matsugamine Church for a pious moment or two. There is a teeny tiny zoo where you can feed monkeys, lemurs and an elephant if you get desperate for some entertainment.

A note of warning: do make sure you have your ID/passport with you at all times, especially at night as the local police do perform "Gaijin Checks" looking for valid visiting or working visas.
