About Toshima-ku

Historically an agricultural district, there is very little in Toshima-ku for the tourist to explore, apart from getting lost in the massive crowd of daytime commuters to the area for work purposes. One of 8 central special wards of Tokyo, it sits in the northern metropolis area of Tokyo. Its point of difference is the fact that it is one of the most international enclaves where 56% of its residence are of Chinese descent, 20% Korean descent and the balance of its souls are primarily either European or Filipino.

One could always check out the "Sunshine City" entertainment Center with its vast array of "pachinko" parlors (think slot machine of the Japanese kind resembling a pinball machine), boutiques and music venues. There is the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space to explore or the Frank Lloyd Wright designed building "Myonichikan of Jiyu Gakuen" to gawk at for a moment. If you are into walking around cemeteries then check out the Zoshigaya Cemetery or for the temple lover, the small Kogan-ji Temple is where you can pray for a swift and painless death. The Myoko-ji Temple was the inspiration for the horror movie "Ring", based on Japan's best-known ghost story.

If too many ghosts are chasing you then head to the Asukayama Park, which was the first park in Japan, to hang out with the locals slurping on noodles saturated in curry stock under the cherry blossoms.
