About Shinagawa-ku

The central train hub for Tokyo (second to Tokyo Station), Shinagawa is referred to as Shinagawa City, when in fact it is not a city but a subsection of the metropolis of Tokyo where you will find 10 embassies. If you are in Japan and craving some "European" style businesses, it is the area to meander around, as you will see more English than Japanese signs and more Italian and American restaurants than Japanese haunts. The birthplace of Sony, historically it was the playground of feudal lords during the Tokugawa Shogunate. One side of the Shinagawa Station is the "western" side - Takanawa - predominantly residential with numerous hotels, whilst the east side - Konan - is commercial, industrial and now being turned into a residential haven, along the water canals and near the station.

If you are into a bit of bloody history of the seppuku aka ritual sort (ritual suicide), then check out the famous temple and the final resting place of 47 Ronin (samurai) who beheaded an enemy and then had to commit suicide to avoid being executed like common criminals. Not much to look at as far as the temple is concerned, but the small museum includes wooden statues of the ronin and other artifacts, including the receipt that the priests wrote out for the enemy's head.

The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art is for the arty souls displaying works in a 1930s pre-war Japanese styled house. For a light-hearted meander and some fresh air, the Shinagawa Kumin Park is the perfect spot to mingle with the locals, or to hire a bike for a bit more strenuous exercise along one of the many pathways through the woods of over 100 varieties including flowering plum and cherry blossoms. You can even fish in the pond in the park during the winter months, if that takes your fancy. The Epson Aqua Stadium is where you can get up close and personal with the fish that aren't meant for a fishing line, or chat to a dolphin or seal. If you are into fossicking around flea markets, the Tokyo City Flea Market will keep you happy for hours poking around its tea ceremony bowls and kimonos.
