About Shibuya-ku

The young fashion center of Japan or at least one of them, Shibuya-ku is not a city but a special ward in Tokyo with one of Tokyo's busiest railway stations and a dynamic nightlife scene happening. This is where the young and hip hang out, as it is within walking distance of 2 large shopping centers. It is close to Yoyogi Park and the Meiji Jingu shrine. You will fall out of the railway station into a pulsating world of youth at the Hachiko exit that opens onto a 5-way scramble crossing under a monstrous video screen into a square flanked by department stores and Starbucks.

The common meeting place in this hectic square is "Hachik?", a rather small statue of a dog. Apart from being prime position for a bit of people watching, it is the symbol of loyalty. The story behind "Akita" (the dog) is a beautiful one that will bring tears to your eyes, so you can read the inscription whilst waiting for whatever or whoever, just like Akita did. For the fashionista, Center Gai is the creative enclave for many of Japan's youth fashion trends and it is jammed full of boutiques, video game arcades and music stores. If the arty soul doesn't want to browse boutiques, there is the Bunkamura complex with an art museum and a theater to catch a show.

Awash in bars, this is the perfect area for a Tokyo pub-crawl before venturing to one of the mega-clubs overflowing with thirsty patrons doing shots. For those that need sustenance before hitting the grog, you could always indulge in a bit of whale meat at Kujiraya restaurant, or just grab some rice balls from one of the many little sidewalk eating establishments.
