About Konan

Konan sits in the south of the Shiga Prefecture of Japan. The town was created in 2004 by the merging of 2 towns "Ishibe and Kosei" and has a population of around the 54,292 mark. Once the idea of getting involved with startups was a "Plan B" approach for many of Japan's youth, just in case they couldn't get work. Today this is a different story. Many tech savvy youth have been lured into the IT startup world by media hype, the success of e-commerce and Internet gurus such as Mixi and Mercari plus government incentives. Coworking venues have appeared on the streets and are now seen as the place to mingle and collaborate with likeminded souls.

Japan does lag behind China and Silicon Valley, but the future holds a more positive outlook. Most Japanese startups tend to focus on their own domestic market due to the language barrier, which is actually the world's 3rd biggest market giving them a home-turf advantage. Foreign competitors have trouble attempting to infiltrate the Japanese market, as it is relatively closed off to outsiders.

Coworking venues are awash in local innovative tech gurus who collaborate and connect by the day and indulge in a little bit of sake and noodles at night.
