About Chōfu-shi

Chofu-shi, a city in the metropolis of Tokyo is definitely the land of mums, dads and 1 or 2 children that is played out every weekend when the local train station is bursting in a cacophony of kids giggles and squeals. Basically an unremarkable western suburb, it is a great way to spend a day if you happen to be in central Tokyo to see its 2 main attractions, the Jindaiji Temple and Jindai Botanical Gardens.

You can take a meander down the somewhat dilapidated Tenjin-dori Street and check out the colorful and traditional eateries amidst the mum-and-pop storefronts overflowing with character. The street side figurines of the "GeGeGe no Kitaro" manga series plus the small Fushimi Inari Tenjin shrine are the perfect places for a photo opportunity. You can check out the Buddhist temple and elaborate gate of the Taishoji Temple, or go to the Shinto Shrine at the end of the avenue, Fudatenjin Shrine to take another selfie in front of the ancient stone lion-dog statues or the big ox. It is said that the shrine dates back to the 15th Century and the days of the Shogunate. If you are lucky enough to be there on the 25th of each month, you can swan around a typical local market and mingle with the locals.

Of course there is the Jindai Temple to gape at, founded in 733AD it is the 2nd oldest temple in Tokyo with one of the buildings having a rare thatched roof. After meandering around this beautiful structure and its stunning gardens of stone paths, head outside the main gate and grab some soba noodles from one of the many street vendors selling traditional food. The other site for day-trippers to Chofu-shi is the Jindai Botanical Garden, where you can saunter around 42 hectares of exquisitely landscaped grounds.
