About Chiyoda-ku

Chiyoda City is not really a city, but a "special ward" sitting in the heart of Tokyo where the Imperial Palace proudly stands. The area includes Hibiya Park, the National Museum of Modern Art and the Yasukuni Shrine. It is often referred to as the "political center" of Japan, due to the fact that many government institutions can also be found in Chiyoda-ku (think the Prime Minister's Official residence and the Supreme Court) as well as many of Tokyo's landmarks such as the Budokan, Tokyo Station and the Yasukuni Shrine. The district of Akihabara (1 of 3 shopping districts - the others being Jimbocho and Kanda) is an "otaku" cultural center (a subculture of anime and manga works) and where to run to if you are in the market for purchasing computer goods.

Literally translated, the name "Chiyoda" means "field of a thousand generations". It is possible to poke around the Imperial Palace (only by joining a guided tour that you need to book on-line) with its moats, gardens and high walls where once the Edo Castle stood, that has been the official residence of the Japanese imperial family since 1868. The area is said to be the most expensive real estate per square kilometer in the world. If you can do without the tour and want to gape at the beautiful cherry blossoms during the months of March and April, the Imperial Palace East Gardens are open Mondays to Fridays. The Nihon Budokan quite often has martial art competitions happening or a live concert to enjoy. The prime spot to view cherry blossoms is the Chidoriga-fuchi Moat, but you will have to fight the crowds that lurk during peak season. This is also where you can hire a rowboat, if you want the romantic view of the blossoms from the moat.

Whatever you do, make sure you take the time to check out the yakitori stalls under the train tracks of JR Yurakucho station and gorge on grilled chicken skewers and gulp down a few beers with the locals.
