About Thisted

With a tiny population of about 15,000, Thisted's claim to fame is its annual World Ploughing Championship. The town swells by an extra 8,000 people during this event that sees 60 ploughmen from 30 countries vying for the title. Yes, it is a beautiful sleepy little town that when "googled,” divulges very little by way of information. The one bizarre fact that kept popping up was a police officer finding a hermit in the local forest who had been living solely on eggs for 3 years. Located in Thy, its origins stem from being a market town since 1500.

Thisted does have its own brewery "Thisted Bryghus" for those that like to indulge in an organic amber drop. You will also find "Langdos" a burial mound 175 meters long, which was constructed between 1800 and 1000 BC and is the largest bronze-age burial mound in Denmark. If by some chance you happen to be into "Runic" inscriptions, head to the Gothic style Thisted Church. You can have time out from the pseudo "hectic" pace walking along the Fjord, eating in quaint waterfront cafes, meandering cute streets and alleys, sailing Thisted Harbor or going for a hike in the countryside. But that is about it for the tourist attractions, apart from a visit to the old sawmill.

Despite its apparent lack of tourist allure, the latest rage in Thisted is to have sex! The town has the lowest birth rate in the whole of Denmark, which threatens the town's existence. So if you are into making babies with locals, this is definitely the town to go to with the local council's encouragement of "Do it for Denmark".
