About Alcala

With an urban landscape of historical monuments, colorful old houses with balconies, wooden framed doors and windows and rich clay tiled roofs, Alcalá is a coffee haven sitting in the mountains, only half an hour bus ride from Madrid.  Its warm climate lends itself perfectly to the cultivation of coffee and a booming tourism industry.  The town itself is so well preserved that it was awarded World Heritage Site accreditation in 1998 from UNESCO.

If you want to learn Spanish, this is the town to go to.  The Cervantes Institute is internationally acclaimed for the learning and teaching of the Spanish language.  You can even get a diploma for your Spanish skills. The list is never ending as to what you can get up to in this fascinating historical town.

You will find decadent natural spas for a touch of self-pampering, an annual film festival and the much loved foodie event "Ruta de las Tapas de Alcalá de Henares" held at the end of Spring each year. If the festival isn't on and tapas won't fill the hole in your belly, try ordering "bandeja paisa" from any one of the many cafes and restaurants dotted around.  You will be presented with a monstrous platter of grilled steak, fried pork and chorizo sausages all on a bed of rice and red beans topped off with a fried egg, sliced avocado and sweet banana chips to give it a finishing touch.  Then try to keep it all down whilst rappelling down the mountainside or zip lining through the forest.
