About Mogilev

A city in the east of Belarus, Mogilev is about 76 km from the border with Russia's Smolensk Oblast and 105 km from the Bryansk Oblast. So it is a border-jumping city, if that is what you are looking for. The administrative center of the Mogilev Region, it is the 3rd largest city in Belarus where it is easy to jump a trolley bus and explore. If you are not fluent in Russian, then give the taxis a miss, as most do not speak any other lingo. This is probably a one-night wonder, if a wonder at all for some.

The beer laden railway station may be your first port of call and if so, do not be put off by the many beer-swilling inhabitants. You can gawk at the railroad employee statue at the entrance to the station that is shadowed by a symbolic bell which you can have a tinkle with, as it is meant to bring you a good journey. The city straddles the Dnieper River, the old section on one side and the new part on the opposite side connected by several bridges. At the city's heart you will find the town hall in a typical Soviet inspired square overflowing with monuments and museums to meander around. For the arty crowd there is the theater and the monument chaser has the Mogilev landmark, the "Arc de Triomphe" covered in Soviet paraphernalia to gawk at. For the superstitious astrologer, make sure you sit on one of the 12 chairs surrounding the statue "Stargazer". The chairs represent the zodiac and legend has it that you should sit in the chair of your star sign, make a wish, walk 3 times around the square, come back and grab the finger of the statue to ensure that you will have good fortune and happiness in your future. Remember if the chairs are busy, do not sit on someone's lap or your wish is void. You can walk through the pedestrian only area of Leninskaja Street and check out the historical attractions such as the Mahiliou, or take time to explore the Regional History Museum or the City Museum. There is the UNESCO heritage site of St Nicholas Monastery Complex to stroll through and the Dubravienka River esplanade is the place to hang out for coffee, a shot of something stiffer or just to people watch from a park bench.
