About Leichhardt

Not a city, but an inner western suburb of the cosmopolitan and dynamic city of Sydney in New South Wales, Leichhardt is affectionately referred to by the locals as "Little Italy". A quirky mix of commercial and residential developments, most of its citizens live and work in the Sydney CBD. The suburb is named after the Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who disappeared without a trace attempting to cross Australia from South Queensland to Western Australia in 1848. It is the area for all things "Italian" from grocery stores to cafes and restaurants. It became the heart of the Italian community during the 20th century with a bustling and vibrant main street, Norton Street, where it is de rigueur to hang out with a super strong espresso in hand.

Encompassing the hustle of the area, other main streets worthy to explore are Parramatta Road and Balmain Road, where you will find numerous bookstores, boutique shops, hotels and a plethora of restaurants dishing up spaghetti or pasta of some description. There is even the Italian Forum located off Norton Street to mooch around, like an Italian piazza with its string of cafes and restaurants open until late. The suburb is awash in schools so you will find plenty of yummy mummies running around in their 4 x 4 vehicles doing the school run. The houses range from Victorian single fronted brick homes or modern creations to blocks of apartments.

Once you have had your fill of rigatoni you can always take a peek at the Old Cyclops Toy Factory on William Street or catch a movie at the Palace Cinema on Norton Street. Leichhardt is where the creative souls frequent and there are numerous panoramas of mural art in Renwick Lane and the Hawthorne Canal Railway Underpass to have a gawk at. Better still, grab a beer at the landmark Leichhardt Hotel on the corner of Balmain Road and Wetherill Street and start chatting to some of the colorful local characters.
