About Fortitude Valley

A commercial hub since the 1890s, Fortitude Valley became the largest shopping district not in a central business area in Australia during the 1950s and the 1960s.  This thriving commercial district died during the 1970s and 1980s and it became a somewhat seedy backwater of illegal gambling dens and a multitude of brothel venues.  Revitalization of the area happened when the Chinatown Mall opened in 1987.  In the 1990s the Brunswick Street pedestrian shopping mall was created and slowly the area regained popularity.

Known by the locals as "The Valley", it is immediately beside Brisbane's heart.  This is the place to go for pumping night time venues, a sleek innovative bar scene, some of Queensland's most awarded restaurants and a somewhat seedy "adult" only entertainment fringe.  You can actually sit on a rooftop and watch a latest movie whilst imbibing in some tapas and cocktails, but remember it is hard to find a taxi at midnight. By day it is perfect for browsing in eclectic and vintage fashion boutiques, getting a caffeine hit in one of the many hip cafes lining the streets, or meandering through an art gallery.  Weekend markets are a treat for those that love to fossick and there are cute laneways with retro shops to explore.
