About Belgrade
Not so much a feast for the eyes but it is definitely a feast of the senses; Belgrade is the capital of Serbia famous for its iconic "Beogradska Tvrdava" fortress sitting where the Sava and Danube Rivers meet. It is where there is a clash of hip cosmopolitan flair with old-world culture in a city that was historically of great strategic importance to the Austrian, Serbian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Nicknamed the "White City", it is emerging from a brutal past and becoming one of the leading places in the world to be with its suave cafe culture, dynamic nightlife and the laid back vibe of the Mediterranean.
Despite its grey bland Soviet Bloc architecture, the city is colorful and dynamic via the inhabitants, the abundance of culture and scenic attractions. It bares its gritty life of socialist remnants squashed between art nouveau masterpieces and Ottoman relics and is one of the most happening cities in Europe. You can stroll around the creative headquarters of the old riverside "Savamala Quarter" or check out the bustling pedestrian boulevard leading to the Kalemegdan Citadel.
For night entertainment you should head to Strahinjica Bana Street, locally referred to as "Silicon Valley" (nothing to do with tech startups) but everything to do with bars, restaurants and pubs to play in. The "silicon" is referring to breast implants and face painted women that drive fancy cars and hang out in the glitzy bars. If you happen to be in Belgrade during winter you may happen to see some crazy people jumping into the frozen Danube - they will be Serbian Orthodox Church believers swimming to recover a Holy Cross thrown in the icy water by a priest.
Make sure you take a peek at the naked man that stands watch over the city, the famous monument of Podednik.
