About Sousse
A city in Tunisia and capital of the Sousse Governorate, Sousse (aka Soussa), sits in the Gulf of Hammamet that is part of the Mediterranean Sea. One of the oldest cities in Tunisia, it has retained an authentic medina that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Blessed with great beaches of clear blue sea, tourists flock to Sousse from Russia, Germany, Britain, Croatia and other East European nations.
Home to the University of Sousse, its economy is based on olive oil, textiles, transport equipment and tourism.
Sousse is where you should definitely agree on a price before you put one foot into a taxi; ensure that the price is not on a "per person" basis and that the meter has not been left on already from a previous fare. Taxis in Sousse have a very bad reputation especially where tourists are concerned for overcharging or scamming. If you are traveling solo, then you can grab a "shared" taxi, but a word of warning, shared means getting quite up close and personal with your co-passengers. You can always grab a bright purple tuk-tuk, a mini-train or a horse-drawn carriage for a quirky ride.
All of the main tourist sites are in the medina maze such as the Great Mosque, the Mosaic Museum, Dar Esid (Traditional Tunisian House) a charming small museum with a beautiful central courtyard and a tower, as well as Kalaout El Koubba another small museum in the center of the medina. If you are there at the right time, once a week there is the Camel market, not to buy a camel, but for everything else you can think of. Be careful, as this is a pickpockets hangout. You can haunt the port watching the fishing boats or worship the sun for a while on the beach whilst indulging in smoking a hookah. Take the time to visit a hamam, or have a game of golf.
Do make time to have a haggle over some item you wish to buy at the souks whilst gobbling down some fresh dates; it is a game worth playing.
