About Wroclaw

If you haven't heard of Wroclaw yet, you're about to - it's set to become the 2016 European Capital of Culture and the World Book Capital. Plus, it's hosting the 2016 European Film Awards (so get ready for some A-list celeb sightings).

When you're not chasing after George Clooney, you can take in Wroclaw's wealth of old-world Polish charm combined with a fast-developing high-tech sector. (Branches of Amazon, Google, and Microsoft can all be found here.) The city's good looks are comparable only to its friendly atmosphere and laid-back, Bohemian attitude. And it's also known for its safety -- your biggest threat here is likely some stumbling university students who don't know their limits for Polish vodka or beer.

But don't be fooled by that quiet, Eastern European vibe - this is a thriving urban center. Retail therapy abounds at Bielany Retail Park (Poland's largest shopping mall), the nighttime scene is full of artsy and unique venues, and any picky eater can easily find their go-to place with the number of quality, international restaurants on the rise. (Just make sure to bring small notes with you -- many places here will refuse to break large bills.)

And for those at one with the outdoors, you'll feel right at home here -- Wroclaw is one of Poland's greenest cities. Rent a kayak or take a small ferry cruise on the Oder River to see some of the city's top sites. Plus, zipping around the city is easy with public transportation, with its 22 tram lines and City Bike rental system.

Pro tip: Take a fresh-air work break at Rynek, the city's central square lined with colorful buildings - and enjoy free wi-fi throughout the area.
