About Cebu City
Picture delectable dried mangoes, guitars, golden "Death Masks," cursed monuments, and the Portughese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. WIth all this in mind, Cebu City should begin to intrigue you. Sitting on the eastern shore of Cebu Island, it is the oldest city in the Philippines. This is the site that the Spanish first settled and believed to be the "Fount of Christianity" in the Far East. As a trading and industrial hub, it is the main domestic shipping port in the Philippines and is therefore referred to as the "Queen City of the South."
You can check out colorful pop graffiti art on the walls around the city, visit the Chinese cemetery at the Queen City Gardens, or head over to SM Cebu, one of the biggest shopping malls in the Philippines where you can get lost in the food court area alone. The public Market "Minglanilla," located a couple of kilometers outside the city limits, is definitely worth visiting to see the boisterous and friendly hawkers, who sell everything from fresh produce to fancy trinkets. Make sure you try some fresh "buko" juice (aka coconut juice) whilst having a sticky-beak.
You can also embrace Cebu's history and visit Fort San Pedro, which was built in 1565 or the Plaza Independencia, where many locals regularly get together. Visit the oldest church in the Philippines "Santo Nino Church" and light a candle or two. Meander around Colon Street, the oldest and shortest street named after Christopher Columbus. Grab the makings of a picnic feast and go to the Kawasan Waterfalls for a refreshing dip in the bubbling water. The famous guitar-makers of Cebu can be found near the Lapulapu Shrine, which commemorates the battle between Lapulapu and Magellan.
If none of the above impresses you, you can take a day out to Malapascua Island and dive with thresher sharks in the wee hours of the morning!
