About Utrecht

A religious center of the Netherlands since the 8th Century, Utrecht was the most important city in the Netherlands until it was succeeded by Amsterdam after the Dutch Golden Age; but it remains the cultural and religious heart. Sitting in the eastern corner of Randstad, it is cloaked in an ancient historical past of medieval buildings, canals and Christian monuments. Home to the largest university in the Netherlands, Utrecht University, it is a transport hub for rail and road.

This is a town for those that love buildings of the past. Cathedral Square is where you will find the most important church in the whole of the Netherlands, St Martin's Cathedral complete with old tombs and believe it or not, the internal organs of Emperors Conrad II and Henry IV in a crypt. There is a 14th Century cloister that links the cathedral with the university, beautifully decorated windows and a stunning Cloister Garden complete with a fountain. The iconic Domtoren, a massive tower standing 112 meters high, is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. There are 50 bells, viewing galleries overlooking the old city and 2 chapels to explore. The downside is the fact that you have to climb 465 steps to get to the top. The museum buffs will love walking around the Museum Catharijneconvent displaying religious art from eons ago. Another museum to meander around is the Museum Speelklok that is dedicated to barrel organs and music boxes from the 18th Century to the present day. Whilst the Centraal Museum is the main museum of Utrecht, where the art lover can have fun as well. The fairytale looking De Haar Castle is the largest castle in the Netherlands and is full of antique wonders from tableware to a Japanese coach designed especially for women. The apron of the grounds that surround the castle, hold acres of trees, fountains and formal gardens.

The highlight of this town is to stroll around the ancient canal and locks running through the city's heart where you will find plenty of cafes and restaurants to pop into along the way or some boutique shops to flash the credit card in.
