About Exeter
The birthplace of JK Rowling, Exeter is a cyclist's heaven where you will find lazy beaches, an array of boutique shopping, birds, serene countryside, friendly people and the odd busker or two to entertain you whilst pushing those peddles. It is definitely not the place to take a lover on a secret rendezvous, as there are so many CCTV cameras around the city, you have every chance of being caught on a camera at least 300 times in one day, so don't forget to wear a smile.
It was first occupied in 250 BC by a Cornish tribe who were later over run by the Romans. Guilty witches were hung on the outskirts of the city and spring water was delivered via a man-made system in passages under the streets. These underground tunnels are now a tourist attraction for the curious few who want to gawk at pipes. Unfortunately for those around at that time, the pipes were made of lead. The town is literally stuffed with history, like the oldest civic building in the whole of Britain - Exeter Guildhall - with parts dating back to 1160 and it is still in use today, or the Royal Clarence Hotel built in 1768. The architecture will leave you stunned.
Exeter is known as the cathedral city of Devon, sitting on the River Exe, it is a charming country town only 60 km northeast of Plymouth and 110 km southwest of Bristol.
