About Colombo
The capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo has a long history as a port city on the ancient east-west trade routes that is reflected in its architecture. Today the city is a coworking enclave for remote workers that are roaming the world plus local professionals looking for somewhere to have an office without the large overheads.
Sri Lanka has been overlooked in favor of India's startup glory, but this is set to change as the government and industries are in the process of building an ecosystem that will feed the entrepreneurial youth of the city in a sustained manner. Colombo is ripe for angel investors or those that are merely curious with very deep pockets to get on board. The ecosystem here has been left to its own devices, unobserved by the international limelight due to the plethora of natural disasters and the affect of civil war. This in turn has created an ecosystem with not much infrastructure, but this is gradually changing. The scene is ready for an increase in coworking spaces where innovative souls can work in bright spaces with a relaxed atmosphere and a stable Internet connection.
Sri Lanka has an abundance of technical talent plus many of its youth educated overseas are now returning to their homeland with a broader outlook on life and business. It is the youthful exuberance of these returning educated souls who will make a difference to the Colombo's IT scene. Colombo as a city will not disappoint you when you duck out the doors of your coworking space. There is some stunning landmark colonial architecture to gawk at; colorful bustling markets where you can buy everything and anything, plus long shady boulevards to meander. You can stroll along the Galle Face Green promenade or join the locals in a game of their favorite sport, cricket.
Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka produces 80 to 90 percent of the world supply of cinnamon, so when it is time to relax and let your brain have a holiday, take the time to sip on a real cinnamon flavoured black tea for which the country is famous.
