About Phuket

With its pristine white beaches, breathtaking sunsets, modern conveniences, and laidback attitude, it's no surprise that 30,000 expatriates have made this "pearl of the south" their home. Phuket is the largest of the Thai islands but also the most expensive of any Thai province. Farang (foreigner) prices are notoriously inconsistent with those for locals, but before you get your sarong in a twist, keep in mind that the cost of living is still incredibly low. You can easily go in on a nice villa-share or apartment rental for $300. Aching to live on Patpong Beach with a view of bikini-clad tourists? That will run you $600. However, for a month of comfortable off-beach living, bills, DSL internet ($20), transportation, meals, and groceries, $1000 total is a fair bet.

Among all the quirky expats you're bound to come across in Phuket, there are also plenty of entrepreneur types (not that we're not the quirkiest of the bunch). There are increasingly more freelancers, marketers, and especially startup tech companies coming to Phuket to actualize the dream of working from a beach and parasailing over lunch, and Phuket's growing coworking community is reflective of that.

Due to its relative prosperity, Phuket also has great infrastructure and health care - first-rate hospitals, clinics, and dental facilities that expats prefer in quality and cost over those in their home country. All in all, the laidback lifestyle, affordability, and countless benefits to living in paradise are enough to make any digital nomad say, "Phuk-et, let's go."

It's also a excellent spot if you want to get your health and fitness on... Soi Tad-ied is a street in the Chalong area PACKED with muay thai camps and gyms with very reasonable package rates (oh and if you have a Thai work permit, let them know as they'll often have secret "local" discounts).
