Slovenia's capital and largest city, Ljubljana is over run with university kids (50,000 odd), decked out in green spaces (think Tivoli Park) and awash in outdoor cafes along the meandering Ljubljanica River.

The commercial hub of Ljubljana is known as one of Europe's most livable capitals and was awarded the coveted Green Capital of Europe title in 2016. It is here that pedestrians and cyclists reign with the horrible four wheeled motor vehicle banned from its city heart and only allowed in certain restricted areas. Referred to as a "jewel box" city, because of its early modern and minimalist design, the city is picture postcard perfect. Oozing charm, it is a relatively small town to get around and to experience its rich history from the Dragon Bridge (1901) to the historic Ljubljana Castle. Think Venice meeting Vienna, but without the hordes of tourists and you have Ljubljana.

You can take a stroll around the lively and colorful open-air Central Market and rub shoulders with the locals or check out Tivoli Park with its fountains, ponds, mansions and exhibitions that are held in this stunning green area. Meander along the riverfront dividing the medieval center from the rest of the city and people watch as you sip a wine or an espresso, depending on your proclivity and the time of the day. Check out the Three Bridges that connect the 2 sections of the city and take a few selfies to satisfy your Facebook friends.

The architectural buff will swoon when standing in the cobbled plaza of Preseren Square with its exquisite architecture - such as the salmon pink Franciscan Church. The history fan can check out the Ljubljana Castle sitting on a small hill in the center of the city dating back to the 15th Century.
