About Markham

Originally an agricultural community, it was post World War II when the city of Markham became an urbanized township. Sitting in the Regional Municipality of York, it is the 4th largest community in the Greater Toronto area. From 2013 the tertiary industry has been the focus of the economy with over 1,000 technology and life-science companies calling the city home. Quite a few multinational companies such as Toshiba, American Express and Oracle to name a few, have their Canadian Headquarters here. The largest city employer is IBM.

The city is laid out in a grid fashion, so it is easy to rumble around on a colored bus or via foot power without getting too lost. You should head to Main Street Unionville, an historic small village from the 1840s with quaint buildings and plenty of cafes, if you want to take a leap back in time. Another small village but from the 1800s is the Old Markham Village where you will find the Markham Museum to crawl over and every Saturday there is a bustling farmers' market to stock up on some local goodies. For a taste of the orient, you should head to the Pacific Mall, the largest Chinese indoor mall in North America. Yes, it appears to be all about shopping and flashing that plastic card, as the forerunner to the Pacific Mall was the Market Village that still retains heaps of shops to invade and fantastic noodles to slurp on if the hunger pangs attack.
